Frank Biermann, a Research Professor in Global Sustainability Governance at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, is the 2024 laureate.

He is the first political scientist to receive the Volvo Environment Prize and the founder of the Earth System Governance Project, a transdisciplinary research network of sustainability scholars that develops better governance solutions.

What is the Volvo Environment Prize?

The Volvo Environment Prize aims to recognize and support outstanding scientific achievements that contribute significantly to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Who awards the Volvo Environment Prize?

The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded by an Independent Foundation. The Secretariate of the prize is hosted at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, an international research institute for global sustainability in Stockholm, Sweden.

The process for the selection of the laureate involves a call for nominations, a screening process by a Scientific Committee, and then the successful candidate is chosen by an international Prize Jury.

The Foundation’s work is financed by the Volvo Group, a leading manufacturer of vehicles and heavy-duty machines. The Group is committed to sustainability in its entire value chain. Environmental issues and sustainable development have been part of Volvo Group’s core values since the 1980s.

What are the criteria for the award?

Scientific excellence and contributions to decision making and policy are the most important criteria. The candidate must have an outstanding research and publication record with emphasis on impact.
